The Nitty Gritty

(Easter Sunday. Mom has been on steroids for a while and that makes her puffy, yes she looks different, but that's the look of a warrior! :)

In an effort to make it through this post I will be as clinical as possible.

Okay, so when a person is on chemo, they are usually on it for a few weeks at a time. I have been told by medical professionals that chemo is just the nastiest stuff, many call it poison. Mom has been on chemo for 18 months. It has taken it's toll on her body. It is no longer helping and is now detrimental. She made the decision to go off of treatment during General Conference weekend. When we informed the doctors of her decision they were glad we came to that conclusion on our own first, it was going to be their recommendation we go off anyway.

So, mom went off treatment. She was lucid when she made this decision. What does that mean you ask?

It means that mom's body cannot keep up with her fightin' spirit anymore. Her cute little body is starting to fail her.

So, Elder Bird got to fly home for a 3 day pass from his mission (his mission president is an amazing man). Jacob got to come and hug and love and see and help (we all got to be together on Easter Sunday, not a coincidence!). He is safely back in Tucson and has peace. He now understands as he had the tangible experience he needed. It doesn't make it easier, but a little understanding goes a long way.

Okay, that's all for now.

Let's review:

Mom's off chemo, it was her choice.
Jacob got to see her.
All her kids were together on Easter Sunday.

Oh yeah, we moved back to Spokane yesterday. We are here at home, right where she wanted to be.

I can't give you a when, but it could be very soon, or a few months. Nobody but her Father in Heaven knows, thank goodness we know where she is going next.

Just know, we never gave up the fight, but you just can't win 'em all.

Thank you for your help and your prayers. We still need them. This is hard, but it is an honor to take care of this beautiful and amazing woman.

Please let Sheri know how much we love her. She is an amazing woman, mother and friend. What courage and strength she has shown. Even though she is leaving earth earlier than desired by her family and friends she has fought the good fight and won her crown of glory! We are so happy your family was able to be reunited for a special Easter weekend.
We love you, Colleen & Tom

Sending our love to your family....what examples of Christ's love you have shown in taking care of your Mom! Tell her we love her and that I will always remember our fun visits in Earnie's office, telling each other about our kids and grandkids. May you each be blessed with peace as a result of our knowledge of eternal families.

Sounds like it was an Easter Sunday to remember. Oh, you wonderful lovely people! Your strength and courage amidst stress, worry, and pain are truly inspiring. I'll pray for you guys to be able to have the way opened so that you can all enjoy spending as much of whatever time is left together with your mom. The wonderful thing is that it won't be the end for real, but it will be a pause so it's nice to store up lovely memories to get you through to the time when you're reunited. :) Lindsay, you're the only one I know personally but I still extend my love to you all.

I am so glad we were able to spend the weekend with you recently. Sheri you are everything a big sister should be and have tought me so much about patience, loving my children & putting them as a priority, living life to the fullest, looking at the positive even in the darkest of hours, and much more. Your smile has been stuck in my head this past couple of weeks. I love you so much, I know that you have been through hell this past two years and my heart breaks at thinking this happened to you. You have amazing children, but you already know that. What a shining light they all are. They have the best of both you and Keith in the way they look and in the way they live their lives. I'm so proud of the wonderful loving adults they have grown to be. Thank you for loving me, for being there for me, for giving me encouragement and the strength to go on. My own challenges seem like nothing now compared to what you're going through, but through it all you still kept encouraging me. I love you! I continue to pray for your comfort and peace. I feel there is great excitement on the other side of the vail, only wish I could be a part of that crowd to welcome you home.

Although I know you all probably don't feel super strong during many, if not most, moments, from the outside looking in it is so evident that the Bird family has faith and love beyond comparison. Thank you for being as strong as you can during these difficult times. You are setting an amazing example for me, and others, and changing the way people view life and happiness. I know it has touched me.

I love you all, and Aunt Sheri I love you so much! The entire Grimes family loves you. You have been an angel in the lives of all those you have been around.

We love you!!

These days of transition are the very hardest, but you will be there to hold her hand and accompany her on her journey as long as you can be. Her spirit is whole and strong even as her body is not, and I know she feels of your love and spirit, even when she cannot noticeably respond. I loved playing beautiful music to my mom and I know it gave her peace and helped her to relax. Lots of love to all of you. May you have comfort and peace knowing she is soon going to be with your Dad and other loved ones who will welcome her with resounding shouts of joy.
